I ran my first business, a food stall at Brick Lane Food Hall, but it took our Mastermind group weeks of meetings to bring the idea to life.

The 10 Best Businesses To Start with Little To No Money At All

With most people experiencing restrictions on their movement due to the global pandemic, you can start any of these businesses from the comfort of your own home.

1. Freelancer

In the world of freelancing, you can simply work from the comfort of your own home and be your own boss. You could literally have your first client today by offering competitive rates and listing your skills on freelancing websites like Fiverr and Upwork. Thousands of small businesses scroll through these websites daily as they look to outsource a business need, make sure to list your offering to be seen by potential customers. If you have knowledge in a particular field or worked in a particular industry, you could do the following:

  • Consulting
  • SEO
  • Transcription
  • Design
  • Illustration
  • Coding
  • Transcription
  • Web Development
  • Editing

2. Social Media Manager

Do you have a knack for social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest? As a Social Media Manager, you use your skills to manage the social media accounts for companies across various industries and niches. In a nutshell, you could become an integral part of your clients social media strategy by helping them to communicate regularly and consistently with their target audience. Furthermore, you could manage the accounts of individuals. With the rise of influencers and their ability to drive massive traffic to the sponsored brands they promote, influencer marketing has become more popular. Even though an influencer may have a strong following, they may not have the expertise to market as effectively as they would like. Therefore, a lot of influencers procure the services of a marketing agency or employee to run their social channels.

3. Data Entry Clerk

Google states that it’s goal is “to organise the world’s informationm,” truly we are living in the information age. The way that we consume, organise and manage information is evolving rapidly. Information is the most valuable currency in the booming digital economy. Many businesses seek Data Entry Clerks, to help them enter information into their computers systems and spreadsheets. If you are a proficient on the keyboard, this might just be the right gig for you.

4. Ecommerce

Through the global pandemic we have seen the collapse of established retail giants in Europe and across the Atlantic. You could say, the pandemic was like tide going out, only to reveal those businesses that were swimming naked.

In 2019, retail e-commerce sales worldwide amounted to 3.53 trillion US dollars and e-retail revenues are projected to grow to 6.54 trillion US dollars in 2022. Online shopping is one of the most popular online activities worldwide. Credit: Statista

With so many people staying at home and reluctant to go out, online shopping has skyrocketed. Platforms such has Shopify, WooCommerce and Amazon FBA to name a few, makes it easy for entrepreneurs to enter the market with limited budgets. Whether you choose to create your own print on demand brand, source wholesale vendors to get your inventory, or adopt the popular Aliexpress/dropshipping model, you can build and launch a store within days and scale it to the moon by implementing an effective Facebook marketing strategy.

5. Virtual Assistant

There’s a large number of businesses and entrepreneurs in the marketplace that are too small to fund the cost of full-time administrative staff, because they have way too much work for their existing team to handle. Virtual Assistants can shore up the ship by helping these businesses to run more efficiently as they look to scale up. Virtual Assistants perform any number of task that includes: social media posting, writing product description, fulfilling orders and invoices, data entry, organising files, arranging meetings or phone calls, and doing market research.

The aforementioned Joe Rogan reaches hundreds of thousands through his weekly podcast, you could start a podcast or YouTube channel for absolutely nothing. With some effective organic marketing you could grow a loyal following, YouTubers receive 55% percent of the revenue share from ads placed via AdSense. If you want to work for yourself but you are not sure what business to start then the content creation route could be the right niche to start your entrepreneurial journey, especially if you have something interesting to say.

8. Open a T-Shirt Online Shop

Print on Demand companies like Printful and ecommerce platform like Shopify have made it ridiculously easy and cheap to start an online t-shirt business.

WOOF WOOF…

Check this, Shopify offers a 14 Day Free Trial, you could build a store in hours with a free theme, connect the Printful App to Shopify and find a cool design to pop onto your t-shirt through the mock-up generator on Printful.

One of the best way to get started with ecommerce is to target things people are passionate about, for example, you could sell t-shirts to dog lovers; if you are an apt designer that’s a bonus, but if you’re not, simply go to a freelance site like Fiverr or Upwork. You can get a freelancer to design you an amazing logo to pop on your t-shirt, this will cost you between $10 to $30 dollars. Now you have your dog print logo, upload design onto a beautiful model or flat lay on Printful, import the product directly from Printful to your Shopify store front. Simples!

Now you need to buy a domain name, something like germansherpherdtshirt.com, this will set you back about $15 from either Godaddy or Namecheap, both integrate seamlessly with Shopify. So you got this together in 4 days, now it’s time to run your Facebook Ads targeted at people who like pages related to German Shepherds. This would be my go to business model on a lean budget, I personally launched t-shirt business with Shopify targeting the Christianity niche, my Facebook Ad budget was $120, I managed to scale this business to $3,000. Shopify has a fantastic training library that shows you everything from Print on Demand to Facebook Ads, Email Marketing, Instagram and much more. And yes they are hundreds of gurus on YouTube who do provide some valuable content, my personal favourite is The Ecom King.

9. Selling Online Courses

Online information outlets and social media have changed how we consume content, in the same way, people are changing the way they consume education. If you have expertise in a specialist area, you could package your knowledge and start making money out of it, by selling online courses or teaching online. Platforms like Kajabi and Udemy makes it easy for you to sell your online course, membership site or coaching program.

10. Proof Reader

If you don’t consider yourself much of a writer but you can devour a book with ease, becoming a proof reader could be write :-) up your street. The model is simple, have people send you their manuscripts for books, research papers etc. I am less of a fiction reader, I have more interest in business related content, I would happily proof read anything to do with business entrepreneurship . Therefore, I suggest you target something you are interested in reading about, and give them honest feedback before they publish their masterpiece.
